Graduate Assistantship (Ph.D.) in forest restoration at Texas Tech University, USA

The Department of Natural Resources Management at Texas Tech University is seeking a highly motivated, talented and hard-working graduate student (Ph.D.).  

The field research portions of their dissertation will be conducted in north-central New Mexico in collaboration with faculty and students with the New Mexico Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.  

The selected student will be expected to develop and focus their dissertation research on elk ecology, within already existing larger project goals of the influence of large-scale forest restoration treatments on vegetation and elk resource selection, space use and foraging ecology.  

The selected student will begin the graduate program in the Department of Natural Resources Management at Texas Tech University for the Fall 2015 semester.  The Ph.D. graduate stipend will be ~$20,000/year and will include insurance and out-of-state tuition waiver.

Requirements:
Candidates must have a M.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology or a related field, a GPA: 3.3, competitive GRE scores (300 verbal + quantitative), and a valid U.S driver’s license.  

Prior experience conducting field research on large mammals, collecting vegetation data, and working in remote locations and experience with radio telemetry is preferred.  

Use of GIS technology and geospatial analyses experience is also preferred.  Field work will require hiking 3-6 miles/day over rough terrain and occasional camping in the backcountry.  The selected student will be required to present research results at professional conferences, publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific publications, and assist with preparation of project reports and grant proposals.

Ph.D. Assistantship in the Wildlife Biology Program University of Montana, Missoula, USA


Wildlife biology program at University of Montana, Missoula seeks a highly motivated Ph.D. student to examine ungulate population dynamics in the Rocky Mountain Front of Montana. 


The student’s research will develop and expand our understanding of mule deer migration, population dynamics, harvest and management strategy, and understanding the role of males in mule deer population structure. 

The research is highly collaborative and will involve frequent interaction with personnel from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, representatives of the Boone and Crockett Club, and local landholders; we therefore seek a student who is committed to fostering positive working relationships with all collaborators. 

The student will be supervised by Dr. Mike Mitchell and Dr. Paul Lukacs in the Wildlife Biology Program at the University of Montana.

Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship Fishery at University of Maine, USA

Responsibilities:  
  • Incumbent will study the downstream migration and life history characteristics of the American eel in the Penobscot River.  
  • Work will include fishing a weir, radio telemetry of adult migrants to inform a forecasting model and to assess survival.  
  • Quantitative skills (e.g. Programs Mark, R) and field experience in rivers desirable.   Student will actively collect, tag and track fish annually under challenging field conditions.  
  • Laboratory approaches may be developed.  
  • Ability to interact and communicate professionally is essential. 


Qualifications: 
  • M.S. in bio or equivalent, quantitative skills, interest in fisheries science.  
  • GPA of 3.2+ and GRE of 300+ (1200+) desired.   


Salary: $23,000 per year (4.5 –year), $2400 health, tuition waiver. Funding is renewed annually.  One year of TA support is anticipated.

PhD and MS Position in Ecology at Utah State University || Lake Ecology Lab

The Lake Ecology Laboratory is looking for a curious and driven PhD or MS student to join us in beautiful Logan, Utah to study the ecology and conservation of fishes throughout the Intermountain West.

Drought is often a primary effect of climate change and is of particular concern for lakes and reservoirs throughout the western United States. Understanding the effects of drought on lake ecosystems, therefore, is critical. Bear Lake, UT/ID (shown above) holds a unique assemblage of endemic, cold-water fishes including sculpin, cisco, whitefishes, and Bonneville cutthroat trout (picture below) as well as introduced lake trout. Our goal is to understand how drought-induced reductions in lake level alter critical littoral habitat in lakes and reservoirs in the Intermountain West and to test whether changes in littoral habitat influence the cold-water fish community. All of these cold-water species directly or indirectly depend on littoral habitat for spawning or prey production. Ultimately, we want to understand how to better manage these fishes in a changing climate. While this work will expand to other lakes and reservoirs, the research
will initially focus on Bear Lake.


Responsibilities: 

  • The prospective graduate student will develop their field-based thesis within the overall framework of the study. 
  • The student will have opportunities test whether drought-induced changes in lake level influences littoral habitat and, subsequently, fishes and aquatic food webs using descriptive statistics as well as statistical, physical, and biological models.

PhD Fellowships in Biological and Environmental Science in Finland

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science at the University of Jyvaskyla seeks applicants to two PhD students position focusing on a paleolimnological approach for examining carbon pathways in high latitude lake food webs. The positions will start in 2015 and be based in Jyvaskyla, Finland.

The objective of the applied PhD student's project is to improve our understanding of climatic controls on carbon transport from terrestrial sources to aquatic systems, ecological impacts of carbon-driven lake optics, and carbon utilization by different functional groups of aquatic fauna in a long-term temporal perspective and under natural climate fluctuations. The project will contribute to unravel the relationships between climate change and lake food web functioning in environmentally sensitive high latitude lakes, and provide information on natural fluctuations of lake functioning as a reference for future assessments.

The successful candidate will carry out paleolimnological research in high latitude lakes in Finnish Lapland and northern Canada.

Specifically, the PhD project will utilize spatial and temporal sedimentary datasets with the aims to examine species-environment relationships with a focus on carbon-driven lake properties, reconstruct past lake-water conditions related to terrestrial carbon input, and clarify the contributions of terrestrial and aquatic carbon sources to aquatic food webs. The research methods include microfossil analysis of aquatic invertebrates, paleoenvironmental modeling, and carbon stable isotope analysis. The PhD candidate will be part of the paleoaquatic research group and supervised by Dr. Liisa Nevalainen (Univ. Jyvaeskylae), Prof. Milla Rautio (Univ. Quebec Chicoutimi), and Dr. Tomi Luoto (Univ. Helsinki & Univ. Jyvaeskylae).

Applicants should have a Master's degree in Biology, Limnology, Environmental Sciences, Geosciences, or a closely related subject.

PhD Position at University of Innsbruck

PhD Position
(Early Stage Researcher Fellowship)
Description of the Position
Applications are invited for a PhD position, working under supervision of Klaus R. Liedl in the Department of
Theoretical Chemistry at University of Innsbruck as part of the Marie Curie Training Network NANODRUG. The
NANODRUG Network is funded by the European Commission and comprises of 13 teams from different
countries. This Network will provide an exceptional training platform for young researchers to acquire a variety of
interdisciplinary and intersectorial skills in the area of nanomedicine.
The project in Innsbruck will focus on computational studies of the nanoparticles' interactions occurring during
their application to patients (e.g., computer simulations of membrane permeation by nanoparticles and drug
interactions with nanoparticles). The successful candidate will attend regular training courses and international
meetings and will be expected to go on three secondments to other teams of the NANODRUG Network.
The starting date for the contract is expected to be April/May 2012. The position is available for a fixed term
period of 36 month. The successful candidate will register for the doctoral programme Chemistry at University of
Innsbruck. The appointment will be on a fixed gross salary of € 34.416,20 per annum (for 40 working hours per
week).
Requirements for Candidates
Candidates must have a master or diploma degree in Chemistry with strong background in physical and
computational chemistry. Experience in application of computer simulations and programming/scripting skills are
of advantage. We expect sufficient knowledge of English (both written and spoken). Knowledge of the German
language is beneficial but not required.
Due to this project being part of a Marie Curie Initial Training Network, eligibility rules apply. Applicants must not
be nationals of the state in which the project and research is to take place – in this case Austria. Applicants also
must not have lived, worked or studied in Austria for more than 12 months in the last 3 years. To qualify as “Early
Stage Researchers” applicants should be within the first 5 years of their research careers.

The Nanoelectronics group in the IMS Laboratory performs research and development primarily in the area of modeling of integrated electronic devices, including SiGe-based, InP and Carbon technologies. The laboratory is working in a multidisciplinary environment, spanning materials, process technology, circuits, and systems. PhD for Metallic and biomimetic Nano-Catalysts for Glucose Fuel Cells

PhD fellowship (funding secured for 3 years) is immediately available, only for an applicant who lives in Germany or in EU countries, in the research training group (Graduiertenkolleg GRK 1322 „Micro Energy Harvesting“), supported by the German research foundation (DFG) in connection with University of Freiburg.

Responsibilities: for B1 project entitled “Metallic and biomimetic Nano-Catalysts for Glucose Fuel Cells”. The study will use water in oil microemulsion method to prepare monometallic or bimetallic nanoparticles supported on different carbon nanostructured materials in order to utilize as nanocatalysts for one-compartment biofuel cell applications. The synergistic effect of bimetallic or nanohybrid system can be utilized to have tolerant catalysts in this mixed-reactant fuel cell. Mechanistic investigation of reaction products detected by the chromatographic analysis will give insight into fundamental aspects of catalysis, allowing comparison different catalysts in terms of high electrocatalytic efficiency in physiological condition.
Innovative research may be focused at the nanoscale or molecular level. Examples of possible research emphases include the following areas: nanomaterials, biocatalysis, immobilization techniques such as layer-by-layer self assembly of enzymes/polymerized electron mediator on electrode surface, electrochemical engineering, and nanotechnology.
