Graduate Assistantship (Ph.D.) in forest restoration at Texas Tech University, USA

The Department of Natural Resources Management at Texas Tech University is seeking a highly motivated, talented and hard-working graduate student (Ph.D.).  

The field research portions of their dissertation will be conducted in north-central New Mexico in collaboration with faculty and students with the New Mexico Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.  

The selected student will be expected to develop and focus their dissertation research on elk ecology, within already existing larger project goals of the influence of large-scale forest restoration treatments on vegetation and elk resource selection, space use and foraging ecology.  

The selected student will begin the graduate program in the Department of Natural Resources Management at Texas Tech University for the Fall 2015 semester.  The Ph.D. graduate stipend will be ~$20,000/year and will include insurance and out-of-state tuition waiver.

Requirements:

Candidates must have a M.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology or a related field, a GPA: 3.3, competitive GRE scores (300 verbal + quantitative), and a valid U.S driver’s license.  

Prior experience conducting field research on large mammals, collecting vegetation data, and working in remote locations and experience with radio telemetry is preferred.  

Use of GIS technology and geospatial analyses experience is also preferred.  Field work will require hiking 3-6 miles/day over rough terrain and occasional camping in the backcountry.  The selected student will be required to present research results at professional conferences, publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific publications, and assist with preparation of project reports and grant proposals.

Ph.D. Assistantship in the Wildlife Biology Program University of Montana, Missoula, USA

Wildlife biology program at University of Montana, Missoula seeks a highly motivated Ph.D. student to examine ungulate population dynamics in the Rocky Mountain Front of Montana. 

The student’s research will develop and expand our understanding of mule deer migration, population dynamics, harvest and management strategy, and understanding the role of males in mule deer population structure. 

The research is highly collaborative and will involve frequent interaction with personnel from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, representatives of the Boone and Crockett Club, and local landholders; we therefore seek a student who is committed to fostering positive working relationships with all collaborators. 

The student will be supervised by Dr. Mike Mitchell and Dr. Paul Lukacs in the Wildlife Biology Program at the University of Montana.

MS Graduate Research Assistantship in Ecology || Utah State University

The Lake Ecology Laboratory is looking for a curious and driven MS student to join us in beautiful Logan, Utah to explore the ecology and conservation of fishes throughout the Intermountain West.

More than 20% of the world’s freshwater fishes are either extinct or in decline with more than 35% of the freshwater fishes in the United States classified as either imperiled or extinct. In the western United States, invasive species have been recognized as the agent limiting the recovery of 60% of the imperiled fishes. June sucker (shown below) are endemic to Utah Lake, UT (shown above) and are one such imperiled fish species. A recent invasion by an apex predator fish species, northern pike, is raising concerns about the impact of this invasion on June sucker recovery efforts and the future food web structure of this ecosystem. The overarching goal of this study is to determine whether northern pike predation will negatively impact the efforts to restore and protect June sucker. We will evaluate the threat of northern pike predation on the recovery and survival of June sucker in Utah Lake and identify ways, if possible, to mitigate this potential threat.

Responsibilities: 

• The prospective graduate student will develop their field-based MS thesis within the overall framework of this study. 
• The student will have opportunities test whether a northern pike invasion influences the restoration of endangered June sucker using descriptive statistics, statistical models, and biological models.

Graduate Assistantships Available in Great Plains Fish Ecology, Spring 2014‏

Three research assistantships (PhD and MS) are available for spring semester, 2014, to work on patterns, drivers, and consequences of fish distribution and movement in Great Plains streams, rivers, and reservoirs. These opportunities interface basic ecology and applied fisheries/watershed management within a very active ecology community at Kansas State University in cooperation with progressive and interactive state resource managers.

Within the scope of the two funded projects, students will develop a basic ecology research project with management implications.  These funded research areas are: (1) Controls on predator survival and related ecosystem effects, and (2) Coupled climate, cultivation, culture, and fish communities.  More details are included on the attached flyer.

Projects will start January 1, 2014. The stipend is $21,000 per calendar year plus a tuition waiver. Applications received before October 15, 2013 will have the best chance for acceptance.

Japan-IMF Scholarships

The Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) was first introduced in 1993. It is funded by the Government of Japan, administered by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and conducted at various graduate schools in Japan. Its objective is to contribute to institutional capacity building in economic policymaking to promote the sustainable growth of emerging and developing economies in Asia and the Pacific. By training future macroeconomic managers in these countries, the JISPA aims to enable them to better formulate sound economic and financial stability policies needed for sustainable growth and development.

Scholarship awards are made on the basis of the candidate’s academic record and work background, mathematical and statistics skills, English language proficiency, and potential for contributing to the macroeconomic and financial management and economic development of their country.

Eligibility requirements

Target countries: Under current program guidelines, candidates must be a national of one of the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Island Countries, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

Work: Candidates should also currently work for one of the following or related agencies: central bank, ministry of economy, ministry of finance, ministry of planning/development, ministry of trade/commerce, tax administration, or national statistics bureau. The program will also consider officials working in other areas of government that have a significant impact on the formulation or implementation of macroeconomic policy.

Education background: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent with at least 16 years of formal education. Names of schools and attending dates beginning from primary school must be listed in the application. In some cases, 15 years of formal education may be accepted if there is an official explanation (a country’s particular educational system or other exceptional circumstances).

English proficiency: Applicants must have an English language proficiency, which needs to be demonstrated as equivalent to or more than an official TOEFL score of 550, CBT213, or iBT79-80. If TOEFL scores are not available, then an overall IELTS score of at least 6.0 can be substituted.

1. Completed application form: The applicant for the partnership track is requested to apply through the online application system.

2. Official transcripts and official copies of diplomas or degree certificates from all undergraduate and graduate schools: An official copy means a certified copy of the original document with an official seal obtained from the administration office of the university attended. Copies attested by organizations/persons not having notarized/legal bearing will not be accepted.

3. Two reference letters: References should be from applicants’ supervisor at work and/or an academic advisor or professor.

4. TOEFL/IELTS certificate (if available): The TOEFL/IELTS test score must be from an examination taken after December 10, 2007. If a score is unavailable, the applicant will be requested to sit for a TOEFL/IELTS examination prior to receiving a final decision on the scholarship award.

The East-West Center is pleased to announce new fellowships for the Asia Pacific Leadership Program. Entering its eight year, the Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) is the center of excellence for leadership education in the Asia Pacific region. The APLP is a graduate certificate program combining the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership capacity. Based at the East-West Center in Honolulu , Hawaii , the program has created a network of dynamic leaders in 48 countries who are helping to build a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community. All participants receive an APLP Entrance Fellowship valued at approximately $15,000.

ParticipantsThe Asia Pacific Leadership Program seeks outstanding individuals with proven leadership experience or high leadership potential from across the Asia Pacific region, North America and beyond. All participants have at least a Bachelors degree with the majority having graduate degrees as well. At least 20 countries are represented in each cohort. The Master of Science in European Forestry Erasmus Mundus (MSc EF) is provided by a consortium of seven well known European universities. Admission requirements

Graduate Research Assistantships In Shrubland Ecology, Plant Invasions, or T&E Plant & Wildlife Habitat Management

The University of Wyoming Department of Renewable Resources offers degrees in Rangeland Ecology & Watershed Management, Soils, Entomology,(with options in Restoration or Watersheds) and a doctoral Program in Ecology. Shrubland Ecology: We are conducting a variety of projects in shubland ecosystems targeting habitat monitoring and manipulations to enhance revegetation, discourage invasive species encroachment and favor ecosystem function

Invasion Ecology: Graduate research assistantship to investigate exotic species encroachment into native populations in the Northern Great Plains and the Intermountain West. Students with interest in plant evolution are preferred.

T&E Species: Graduate research assistantship (M.S. or Ph.D.) to investigate vegetation management to favor native populations of T&E species including Colorado Butterfly Plant, Prebles Jumping Mouse or Greater Sage Grouse. We are currently conducting a variety of habitat manipulation and revegetation projects in different areas for these targeted species.

In all cases, applicants are expected to: be energetic, highly motivated, capable of pursuing innovative research questions. Successful students must be physically able and willing to work for extended periods under extreme isolated, field and greenhouse conditions, take initiative, be meticulous in record-keeping, drive standard transmission 4-wheel vehicles, possess a valid driver's license and demonstrate strong team spirit and excellent verbal and written communication skills. . Scholarships in Master in Tourism Management (EMTM) in europe

Erasmus Mundus European Master in Tourism Management (EMTM) is a two-year world-class integrated programme aimed at qualifying graduates to deal with the huge challenges in contemporary tourism.

Tourism is a total social and economic phenomenon, which calls for a holistic approach to tourism education where broader aims of the industry and society are explicitly addressed in tourism curricula. The European Master in Tourism Management (EMTM) provides students with a far-reaching and integrated understanding of the multiple disciplines and paradigms concerned with the subject which are bound together through the framework of sustainability.

Scholarship for third-country nationals, eligible for an Erasmus Mundus Category A scholarship, are citizens from all other countries than: the 27 EU Member States. 

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships receive a total of approx. €48.000 during the 2 years of studies. This is a full scholarship that should cover yearly tuition fees, living expenses and travel expenses. A more detailed description of the amount will be given to the student as soon as the scholarship has been awarded.

Applicants need to meet the following admission criteria:

* The IMMIT programme is open to students with a Bachelor’s or equivalent undergraduate degree (180 ECTS) either in Management/Economics/Business Administration or in Computer Science/Information System. Students with an engineering degree can be admitted if their previous education includes IT and information systems.

* A satisfactory scholastic average, a minimum of 3.0 (B) grade-point average, in course work completed during the Bachelor’s degree.

* If you are required an English proficiency test then include an official copy of one of the following English proficiency tests: Academic IELTS (min. 6.5 overall/6.0 on parts), TOEFL (min. paper based: 575, computer based: 233, internet based: 90) or Cambridge Proficiency

* An official copy of your GMAT test. The average GMAT score of accepted students is 600. Or an official copy of your GRE test score. Our incoming students usually score above the 75% percentile on the quantitative section.

* Students with a relevant Bachelor degree from one of the partner institutions of the Tilburg School of Economics and Management, IAE Aix-en-Provence and Turku University do not need to submit the GMAT/GRE test score. (Note: a GMAT/GRE is however required in case a student wants to qualify for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship Category A or Category B).

* A statement of purpose (motivation letter).

* Two letters of recommendation

* Complete resume in English
