Call for the 2014 Coblentz Student Awards and Fateley Award

The Coblentz Society has for many years encouraged young scientists to pursue studies in spectroscopy by seeking nominations of outstanding students for the Coblentz Student Awards. The awardees receive a copy of the Society's Desk Book, a certificate, and a year's membership in the Society. Their names and the names of their faculty advisors will appear in the Society's Newsletter (published in Applied Spectroscopy and available from the Coblentz Society and SAS websites). All awardees who attend the SciX conference will receive their award in person at a presentation during the poster session on Sunday evening by then Coblentz Society's president. Those students who do not attend the SciX conference will receive their award by mail

The three leading graduate students selected by the Coblentz Award committee will also qualify for consideration for the William G. Fateley student award that includes a presentation by the winner at the SciX conference (20 minute oral presentation), a plaque, and a prize of $1000. No separate nomination for the Fateley award is required.

The nominations window for Coblentz Student Awards is open November 1, 2013 – February 1, 2014.  Winners will be announced in February 2014.

Nominations by e-mail are preferred and may be sent to the Chair of the Coblentz Student Affairs Committee, Prof. Rohit Bhargava, at rxb@illinois.edu.  Graduate or undergraduate students who have shown excellence in vibrational spectroscopy research and/or coursework including vibrational spectroscopy may be nominated. The nominator must be a member of the Coblentz Society (to become a member contact Mark Druy at druy@psicorp.com).

Requirements for a complete nomination:

1.       Curriculum Vita for the nominee. These should include contact information (e-mail, telephone and mailing address) for the student that will be valid through July 2014.

2.       A biographical statement suitable for including in an announcement of the award, using a format similar to that used for the FACSS Student Award

3.       Letter of nomination from an advisor or research director of the student

4.       An additional letter of recommendation

5.       An abstract for a poster or oral presentation that might be presented at SciX 2014 presented by FACSS

In 2013 all awardees were featured by having a photograph and a short bio in the SciX 2013 Final program distributed at Milwaukee. All awardees who attend SciX 2013 presented by FACSS in Milwaukee were acknowledged in person at a presentation during the poster session on Sunday evening by the Coblentz Society president – Jim Rydzak.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 
 


Instruction:  The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate level chemistry courses. He/she should be able to communicate effectively, both in written and oral English, with students of diverse educational backgrounds. 
 


Research:  The successful candidate will perform experimental research in either Physical or Analytical Chemistry. It is expected that he/she will involve undergraduate and graduate students in their research, thus expanding the research opportunities in the department. The faculty member will be expected to secure competitive funding. 
 


General:  The appointee is expected to contribute to the research, teaching, and service mission of the institution by serving on committees, advising students, participating in seminars and interacting with faculty and students. 
 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

     

A Ph.D. in Physical or Analytical Chemistry

Post-doctoral experience

Experience in college-level teaching

Evidence of potential for excellence in research

Evidence of potential to secure external funding

postdoc position in microfluidics at University of Kansas

A postdoc position is open in Prof. Zeng’s lab in the Department of Chemistry and the Ralph N. Adams Institute for Bioanalytical Chemistry at the University of Kansas. The successful candidates will work on developing microfluidic platforms and molecular assays for single-cell analysis of cancer cells. The applicants should have strong expertise in one or several of the following fields: microfluidics, gene expression analysis, proteomics, molecular/cell biology, and/or cancer genomics.

Job Description

Position Title: Lab Technician	Reports to: Lab Manager
Work Location: Sinclair Wyoming Refining Company	Functional Department: Lab
Purpose/Accountabilities: The employee will demonstrate safe work practices to conduct physical and chemical tests on refinery products and samples.
Primary Functions Responsibilities:
·         Conduct both physical and chemical testing on fuels, asphalts, associated blend products and process samples ·         Provide accurate and timely data entry of lab results for both process samples and finished product ·         Read and understand all analysis procedures and safety standards in English, including ASTM method of analysis and other analytical standards and procedures used in the laboratory. ·         Assist in or perform analytical tests from well-defined standards and procedures as assigned by the Laboratory Manager.  ·         Participate in proficiency testing programs in accordance with applicable standards and sound laboratory practices. ·         Clean and sterilize laboratory equipment and to treat delicate lab instruments with care and respect. ·         Prepare chemical solutions according to standard formulas. ·         Exercise procedural, safety and quality requirements and strictly follow company policies. ·         Attend training and pass appropriate examinations in petroleum, chemical and gas analysis, including Right-to-Know training, hazardous materials training and other safety and compliance training required by applicable regulations. ·         During scheduled shifts, be able to work by yourself in a safety conscience manner. ·         Perform at a high energy level with utmost attention to detail and results oriented attitude. ·         Follow-through on commitments made to others. ·         Create and maintain a neat, clean and well-organized and professional-looking work area. ·         Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
